How to apply for a Mexico visa or entry document

The steps below are the general shape of a Mexico visa or entry-document process. Your exact requirements depend on your nationality, the document you need and your circumstances, so always confirm against the official SRE consular and INM pages linked on this page.

Check whether you need a visa

Nationals of many countries can enter Mexico as non-lucrative visitors without a visa. Start with the official SRE consular guidance to find out whether your nationality needs a visa or can travel on the tourist card (FMM).

Choose the right document

Short visits usually use the tourist card (FMM / digital FMMD) or a visitor visa. Stays over six months use a temporary resident visa, and permanent residency uses a permanent resident visa โ€” both completed at the INM after entry.

Gather your documents

Prepare the documents the official application asks for. The exact list depends on the document and your situation โ€” follow the checklist on the official SRE consular and INM pages.

Apply through the official channel

Visitor and resident visas are applied for at a Mexican consulate; the digital tourist card (FMMD) for air arrivals is obtained through the official INM system. Use only the official SRE and INM channels linked here.
