Mexico residence cards at the INM explained
Mexico’s residence routes involve two steps: a visa obtained at a consulate abroad, then a residence card completed in Mexico at the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM). This page explains that process in plain language; confirm the details for your situation with the official SRE and INM guidance.
Two steps: visa then card
Temporary and permanent residence both start with a visa applied for at a Mexican consulate abroad. The residence card itself is then obtained in Mexico at the INM.
Temporary Resident Card
For stays of more than six months, holders of a temporary resident visa must complete the process to obtain a Temporary Resident Card at the INM within 30 days of entering Mexico.
Permanent Resident Card
Permanent residents obtain a Permanent Resident Card at the INM. According to the authorities this card does not expire.
