The J-1 exchange visitor visa is a non-immigrant visa for people taking part in approved work-and-study exchange programmes in the United States, promoting cultural and educational exchange.

J-1 requirements and durations vary by programme category, and most participants cannot enter the US more than 30 days before their programme starts.

What is a US Exchange Visitor Visa (J)?

A J-1 visa is provided to students, scholars, researchers, teachers and other exchange visitors on programmes approved by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, covering categories from au pairs and camp counsellors to interns, trainees, teachers and research scholars.

Visa length

Duration depends on the programme: many (au pair, intern, secondary-school student, specialist) are up to one year; camp counsellor and summer work-travel around four months; short-term scholars up to six months; teachers up to three years.

Can I enter the US early?

You cannot enter more than 30 days before your programme starts; to arrive earlier you’d need a separate visitor (B) visa.

Can I work on a J-1 visa?

Work is limited to your programme; students generally cannot work more than 20 hours a week in term time, but may work full-time during official breaks.

What's the difference between a J-1 and an F-1?

Both are for education/exchange, but a J-1 is sponsored by an exchange programme while an F-1 is sponsored by a school or university.

What happens if my J-1 is refused?
