U.S. visa photo requirements are set by the U.S. Department of State, and the acceptance of a photo or digital image is at the discretion of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you apply. An incorrect or non-compliant photograph may delay processing or require you to provide a new photo. Photo requirements depend on the visa category and application process. DS-160 applicants are instructed to upload a digital image as part of the online form, and some embassies or consulates may require applicants to bring a printed photo to the interview. DS-260 immigrant visa applicants must provide two identical printed photos at the immigrant visa interview.

U.S. Visa Photo Size & Format

  • Printed photo size: 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm)
  • Head height must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches, or between 25 mm and 35 mm, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. For a digital image, the head should be between 50% and 69% of the imageโ€™s total height.
  • Photo must be in colour (no black and white)
  • Accepted digital format: JPEG file format
  • Minimum resolution: 600 x 600 pixels
  • Maximum resolution: 1200 x 1200 pixels. The digital image must be square, with the height equal to the width, and the file size must be less than or equal to 240 kB.

Background & Lighting Requirements

  • Plain white or off-white background
  • No shadows on the face or background
  • Even lighting with no glare or overexposure
  • Face fully visible and centred

Facial Expression & Head Position

  • Neutral facial expression
  • Both eyes open and clearly visible
  • Head facing directly toward the camera
  • No tilting of the head
  • Neutral facial expression, with both eyes open and directly facing the camera.

Glasses, Headwear & Accessories

  • Eyeglasses are not permitted, except in rare circumstances when they cannot be removed for medical reasons. A medical statement signed by a medical professional or health practitioner must be provided in these cases.
  • Hats or head coverings that obscure the hair or hairline are not allowed unless worn daily for a religious purpose. The full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast shadows on the face.
  • Face must be fully visible from forehead to chin
  • No headphones, earbuds, or wireless devices
  • No uniforms or camouflage clothing

Children & Infant Photo Rules

  • Children must meet the same photo standards as adults
  • No other person may appear in the photo
  • Childrenโ€™s eyes should be open and looking straight ahead towards the camera.
  • No toys, pacifiers, or hands visible
  • Children should be looking at the camera with their eyes open.

Common Reasons U.S. Visa Photos Are Rejected

  • Incorrect photo size or resolution
  • Shadows on the face or background
  • Wearing glasses or non-religious headwear
  • Smiling or exaggerated facial expressions
  • Blurry or low-quality images
