This page has been reviewed and verified by Michael Gibbons, Regulated Immigration Advisor. For application guidance, see How to Apply for an Iceland Visa (2026).

If you plan to visit Iceland for leisure, sightseeing, or short-term travel, you may need an Iceland Tourist Visa. This visa is part of the Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) system, which allows travel within Iceland and other Schengen member countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Who Needs an Iceland Tourist Visa

You will need an Iceland Tourist Visa if you:

  • Are a citizen of a non-Schengen country that does not have a visa waiver agreement with Iceland.
  • Plan to enter Iceland for tourism, recreation, or visiting friends and family.
  • Do not already hold a valid Schengen visa or residence permit from another Schengen country.

Nationals of visa-exempt countries (such as the UK, USA, Canada, and Japan) do not need a visa for short visits of up to 90 days.

Visa Validity and Duration

An Iceland Tourist Visa:

  • Is valid for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • Allows travel across all Schengen countries during the validity period.
  • Cannot be extended except for emergency reasons, see Visa Extension Guide.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate that they:

  • Intend to visit Iceland temporarily for tourism or leisure.
  • Have sufficient financial means to support their stay and return travel.
  • Hold valid travel and medical insurance covering at least โ‚ฌ30,000.
  • Have booked accommodation and a return ticket.
  • Have no record of Schengen overstays or immigration violations.

Documents Required

When applying for an Iceland Tourist Visa, prepare the following documents:

  • Completed Schengen visa application form.
  • Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after departure).
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs.
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings, invitation letter, or rental confirmation).
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements or income proof).
  • Travel insurance policy meeting Schengen standards.
  • Flight itinerary showing return travel plans.

Refer to our Iceland Visa Documents Checklist (2026) for details.

How to Apply

Applications for Iceland Tourist Visas are submitted through VFS Global or the nearest Icelandic embassy.

  1. Book an appointment with your local VFS Global centre or Icelandic consulate.
  2. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather the required documents.
  3. Attend your biometric appointment (fingerprints and photograph).
  4. Submit your application and pay the visa fee.
  5. Track your application status online using your reference number.

Visa Fees and Processing Times

  • Fee: โ‚ฌ90 for adults, โ‚ฌ45 for children aged 6 to 11.
  • Processing time: 15 to 30 calendar days after submission, depending on embassy workload.
  • Priority services: Available in select VFS centres for faster turnaround.

For the latest processing data, see Iceland Visa Processing Times (2026).

Travel Within Schengen

Holders of an Iceland-issued Schengen visa can freely visit other Schengen states such as France, Germany, and Norway, provided Iceland is their main destination or first point of entry.

Tips for a Successful Application

  • Ensure all bookings and proof of funds are recent (within 30 days).
  • Provide accurate information consistent across all forms and documents.
  • Purchase insurance that clearly states Schengen coverage.
  • Submit your application at least 3โ€“4 weeks before intended travel.

If Your Application Is Refused

You will receive a refusal letter with reasons under the Schengen Visa Code. You may reapply or appeal the decision within 15 days.
See Common Reasons for Iceland Visa Refusal (2026) for guidance on addressing rejection causes.
