Japan eVISA and visa exemption explained

For a short visit to Japan, whether you need a visa — and how you get one — depends mainly on your nationality. This page explains visa exemption, the Temporary Visitor Visa and the JAPAN eVISA in plain language, drawing on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan guidance; always confirm the route open to your nationality before you travel.

Visa exemption first

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Japan has reciprocal visa-exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions, letting eligible nationals enter for a short stay of up to 90 days for non-work purposes without a visa. Check the official visa-exemption list to see whether you are covered.

The JAPAN eVISA

If you are not visa-exempt, the JAPAN eVISA lets eligible travellers apply online for a single-entry short-term-stay tourism visa (up to 90 days). It is available to nationals of eligible countries — confirm on the official JAPAN eVISA pages whether you can use it.

The Temporary Visitor Visa

Where neither visa exemption nor the eVISA applies, the Temporary Visitor Visa is the short-term-stay visa, applied for at a Japanese embassy or consulate. It covers tourism, visits and business meetings, with no income-earning activity.
