How to apply for a Canadian visa or permit
The steps below are the general shape of a Canadian visa, eTA or permit application. Your exact requirements depend on your nationality, the document you need and your circumstances, so always confirm against the official IRCC pages linked on this page.
Check what you need
Start with the official IRCC checker to find out whether you need a visitor visa, an eTA, or just a valid passport, based on your nationality and how you are travelling.
Gather your documents
Prepare the documents the official application asks for. The exact list depends on the visa or permit and your situation โ follow the checklist on the relevant IRCC page.
Apply on the official website
Most applications are made online through the Government of Canada (IRCC) website. Use only the official canada.ca / IRCC pages linked here.
Give biometrics if required
Many applicants are asked to give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at a collection point. Whether this applies to you is set out in your application instructions.
